"Monterey Bujutsu Dojo is a small, private dojo which teaches Okinawan Shorin-ryu Matsumura Seito Karate and Kobudo. It is the California branch dojo (Shibu dojo) of the Shorin-ryu Matsumra Seito Suiken Bugei Kai founded by Shihan Ricky Rose, student of Hohan Soken and Kosei Nishihira, and the dojo instructor is Walt Young.

Training consists of stretching and conditioning (junbi undo), basic techniques (hojo undo), partner drills, kata, tuite, kumite, and kobudo (weapons training). The emphasis is on conditioning the body while developing strong technique and teaching strategy as well as building confidence and character in the student. " Sensei Young teaches in a traditional manner and prefers to keep the number of students small in order to pass on the art on a personal level to each student as it has been done for centuries in Okinawa.

Instructor Walt Young

Mr. Young is the Vice President of the Shorin-ryu Matsumura Seito Suiken Bugei Kai. He began training in karate since 1989 and has been studying Matsumura Seito since 2001. Young Sensei has an interest in history and studies the history of not only our style but Okinawan karate in general, and he also serves as the organization's historian. He lived on Okinawa from 2011-2014 and was able to gain a better understanding of the people and culture of Okinawa from which our art comes. While on island, Walt had the pleasure of regularly training with Isao Toma Sensei, 20+ year student of Hohan Soken and close friend of Kosei Nishihira Sensei. Walt has also trained kobujutsu under Kaishu Isa Sensei, head of Ufuchiku-den Kobujutsu."
